ANNUAL NPO FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE – 2016

 DATE: 26th  – 28th OCTOBER 2016

VENUE: SAROVA WHITESANDS BEACH RESORT & SPA

THEME: Optimizing Possibilities for Your NPO

1.0 About the Conference:

Whether you work with charitable foundations, religious organizations, hospitals, institutions of learning, museums, state associations or one of the many other types of not-for-profit organizations (NPO), this conference is the event that unites CPAs and finance professionals in the NPO sector to sharpen and re-sharpen their tools of trade.

Themed “Optimizing Possibilities for Your NPO” the conference provides insights and practical tips on pertinent accounting and financial reporting and audit standards.

Delegates will also be appraised on legal, tax and regulatory issues in the NPO sector. The sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs of public and private sector professionals. Welcome and join us for an inspiring three-day program as we share knowledge with the best minds in the industry and offer you an opportunity to connect with your peers.

2.0 Learning Outcomes:

Delegates and participants in this years’ conference will get an appreciation of the following pertinent topics:

  1. Identify tax issues, key tax updates and accounting questions related to nonprofits.

Non Profit Organizations (NPOs) have been accused of facing a crisis of accountability and transparency which can lead to credibility damage if remedial action is not undertaken. This however does not under look the important role they play in the development of the Kenyan economy by providing public benefit services/goods.

This session aims to explore the various Tax laws affecting PBOs in Kenya, delve into the tax compliance requirements & reporting, withholding tax rules and applicability with an aim of upholding transparency and tax compliance in the sector.

  1. PBO Act 2013 & Proposed Amendment Bill 2016-way forward

In early 2016, a number of NGOs filed a petition seeking to compel the Cabinet Secretary to commence the implementation of the Public Benefit Organizations (PBO) Act, 2013.  The Petition (No. 351 of 2015) is before the High Court. This follows long-term efforts by NGOs to advocate for the implementation of the PBO Act, which was enacted in 2013, but has yet to be implemented.

The session will give a general overview of the Act together with the 2016 amendment bill, with a deeper discussion on the challenges, implications and current implementation status of the Act.

  1. Forensic Investigation on Donor Funding/Projects:

This session will enlighten delegates on what is fraud (and what it isn’t), the impact of fraud on organizations, red flags that might indicate the presence of fraud and how to proactively plan the audit to detect fraud.

We shall reflect on the professional standards and ethical obligations that define the responsibilities of both external and internal auditors with regard to fraud detection and prevention You will learn about common financial statement manipulation and corruption schemes employed by fraudsters, their red flags and methods to detect them. We shall introduce you to key fraud prevention approaches and provide you with practical solutions to help your organization or your client reduce its losses due to fraud.

  1. Current Financial Reporting Standards affecting not-for-profit Organizations.

Charities and other not-for-profit organizations (NPOs) increasingly work internationally with grants from government funding their development and relief activities, while private donors and international foundations are increasingly taking a global approach to their work. As a result, charities and other NPOs face a multiplicity of international grant regimes, often made more complex by the lack of an agreed approach to financial planning and reporting.

This session will provide delegates a rigorous and detailed review of major IFRS requirements of relevance to non-profit entities.

  1. Convergence of Thoughts between Finance and Program Managers

Development practitioners, specifically program managers and finance managers, are constantly challenged to adopt new strategies and approaches. Our discourse on the Convergence of Thoughts between Finance and Program managers is hinged on some business principles which in our view will go a long way in bridging the gap between financial policies and development strategies. The principles of finance are seemingly becoming more and more intertwined with the way development is pursued. Traditional finance and program managers are always at logger heads when it comes to approach and strategy. While it is healthy to hold divergent views on many issues, at the end of the discourse, it is desirable to have a convergence of thoughts.

This session shall discuss the Theory of Change and Return on Investment, can they be enveloped in the same conversation by finance and program people?

  1. My data is all mobile: Is it all secure?

Whether through USB keys, notebook computers, iPhones, Blackberries or Androids, the data of most organizations is mobile. Its mobility may be as simple as through sensitive email, downloaded files or strategic email attachments, or through on and then offline virtual tunnels (virtual private networks). How do you ensure security when it is seen as an impediment to operating convenience by the holder of your most sensitive data – your CEO?

We will discuss the different and practical means of achieving data security.

  1. Talent Evolution-Developing & Retaining talent for Millennials’

For the first time in recent history, workplace demographics consist of five generations working together, fully networked and using (lots of) networked information in their daily life both socially and at work. By the end of this session, participants will be able to have a deeper and more practical understanding of how to attract and retain millennials in their organizations, departments or teams. We shall also explore the different structures and ways that can keep the networked employee at work and how to come up with retention programs for the networked employee.

  1. Updates from the NGO Coordination Board

The NGOs Co-ordination Board is responsible for inter alia registering, facilitating and coordinating all national and international NGOs operating in Kenya; advising the government on their contribution to national development; providing policy guidelines for NGOs to align their activities with national priorities and receiving and analyzing NGOs annual reports. To facilitate and co-ordinate the work of all national and international NGOs operating in Kenya
