ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) is a regulatory body mandated to regulate and coordinate the activities of qualified and registered Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) in Kenya – including promoting research into the subject of accountancy and finance and related matters, publication of books, periodicals, journals and articles in connection therewith; promoting the international recognition of the Institute, advising the Examination Board on matters relating to examinations standards and policies, advising the Minister for Finance on matters relating to financial accountability in all sectors of the economy and setting and enforcing standards of professional practice such as accounting, auditing and ethical standards.

The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK or the Institute) was established by the Accountants Act Cap 573 laws of Kenya and amended by the Accountants Act no 15 of 2008, with the primary mandate to register, regulate and develop the accountancy profession in Kenya. ICPAK is a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), the global umbrella body for the accountancy profession, and the Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA). Over its long history it has registered over 29,000 members. Its members work in diverse sectors of the economy as accountants, financial experts, auditors and financial consultants. Over 800 of our members have emigrated and are working beyond the borders of Kenya. Members of the Institute are present in 41 different countries around the globe.

ABOUT THE SUMMIT

In fulfillment of its mandate to develop accountants, the Institute holds Continuous Development Programs in which participants interact with invited resource persons, share experiences, and develop policy proposals for consideration by government through the Ministry of Finance.  In exercise of its mandate, ICPAK will hold a two-week Summit on Board Induction from 3trd to 14th October 2022 in Arusha, themed “Sharpening the leadership skills for Boards in pursuit of excellence in their oversight mandate”. Discussions arising from the summit are planned to shed light on the challenges, opportunities, and lessons in enhancing transparency to foster economic growth and development in Africa. The discussions are also meant to shape the leadership landscape in the nation and world at large.

A Board Induction is a structured way of providing new board members with all the information and support they need to be confident and productive in their role. The aim is to help new members to understand the organization, the environment in which it operates, and their role in making the organization a success.

A comprehensive Board induction programme can last for between a few months and a year, depending on scale and complexity of the organization.  It will typically  involve welcoming the new board member and introducing them to the board team and other key personnel, including the CEO and executive directors of each functional area of the company; an introduction to the strategic plan and financial position of the organization;  an introduction to the governance arrangements which are in place; meeting with key stakeholders where relevant and regular reviews with the chair to check understanding, identify issues and encourage development.

New Board Members are faced with the challenge of lack of authentic information on where to start in familiarizing with their role for them to hit the ground running. It is often expected that the new board members should be well experienced without an expectation for induction on basic board matters as well as self-management tips for them to be successful in their role. Lessons on self-management, dress code, etiquette, emotional intelligence and how to conduct effective meetings are all critical for the success of the individual board member as well as that of the entire board in performance of its oversight role.

In line with the above, the Institute has lined up a series of lessons and workshops to build the capacity of new Board Members while enabling knowledge sharing within the more experienced delegates across various sectors. This summit is geared to provide a platform for leaders and new board members to share ideas and obtain knowledge on what is required in their new role as Board Members. Discussions on what works and what does not in terms of board governance, board dynamics and strategic board involvement for all members will also be explored. The seminar will also touch on other self-leadership skills for success.
