Financial Management for the Higher Education Sector

Date: 26th–27th April 2018

Venue:  Hilton Hotel Nairobi

TIME: 9am to 4pm

There has been a significant growth in the higher education sector during the last three decades. Due to some regional and demographical factors, the numbers of higher education applicants and enrolment in vocational, undergraduate and postgraduate levels have increased. As a natural response, more higher education institutions and degree awarding bodies, both state and privately owned, have been founded in order to absorb the growing numbers of applicants.

Obtaining and managing finance is one of the key challenges facing the higher educational institutions over the globe. Due to the recent financial crisis and economic slump, the problem has escalated at the higher educational institutions as the whole sector is experiencing further difficulties in participant numbers, accessing funding opportunities as well as finding financing options. As in many other countries, higher education sector in Kenya faces financing difficulties due to the shortage/reduced public support, the absence of sustainable support from the private sector, the centralization of higher education financial management practices including budgeting, and the ambiguity of strategic financing plans.

To address the emerging financial management and reporting issues affecting this sector, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) has organized a two-day workshop to explore the common practices undertaken by the higher education institutions in order to survive and secure finance to their operational activities. The workshop sheds light on the public support being provided to the higher education institutions through the financial subsides presented by the government. This workshop will provide the delegates with expert knowledge on the practical challenges affecting higher education financial management and offer guidance on compliance with both the regulatory and reporting requirements.

The workshop will highlight on:

  • Financing options and revenue structure: Experience of the higher education institutions.
  • Resource Mobilization, multiannual budgeting and planning
  • Higher education institutional  policy for the development of good governance and its relation to the financial decisions
  • Increased competition and income diversification for higher educational institutions
  • Funding higher education institutions: Best  Business Practices
  • Internal Audit and Audit Committees in organizational management
  • Regulatory and reporting requirements

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Understand what are the available financing options for the higher education institutions
  • Appreciate the extent to which higher education institutions are supported through public subsides
  • Understand challenges facing higher education institutions ‘financial management.
  • Comprehend institutional, regulatory and reporting requirements in the education sector.
