THE INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS OF KENYA
(Established under the Accountants Act, Laws of Kenya)

THE FINANCIAL SERVICES SECTOR CONFERENCE

DATE: 27TH – 28TH SEPTEMBER 2023

TIME: 9: 00 AM – 3:30 PM

MODE OF DELIVERY: VIRTUAL

OVERVIEW

The Financial Services Sector is the largest in the world in terms of earnings, comprised of a wide range of businesses including merchant banks, credit card companies, stock brokerages, Saccos, Insurance Companies among others. Financial services is one of the key sectors factored within the economic pillar of Kenya Vision 2030. Kenyan financial Services Sector has grown tremendously in the recent times fueled largely by innovations that have enhanced financial deepening.  While technology-based innovations such as integrating the mobile phone with financial institutions account for the largest segment of growth, other changes such as focus on the unbanked public and taking services to the customer have welcomed many new clients into the financial system for the first time.

Additionally, the growth of Kenya’s Financial Services Sector is anchored around increased adoption of technology, emergence of alternative channels of distribution, increased financial inclusion levels, and a stable regulatory environment.

Stemming from Vision 2023, the key objective of the Medium Term Plan for the financial services sector is to mobilize savings to realize a savings to GDP ratio of 25-28 per cent as envisaged in the macroeconomic framework underpinning the Vision 2030. This level of savings will sustain an increase in the ratio of investment to GDP of around 30-32 per cent, with a growing amount of resources channeled to support the agriculture, manufacturing and other key sectors identified under Vision 2030, including lending to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This will also further the government’s policy objectives under the ERS, which articulated improved access to financial services for a much larger number of Kenyan households and small enterprises; greater efficiency in the delivery of financial services; and ensure the chances of a financial crisis are kept to a minimum. It is against this backdrop that ICPAK has organized the 2 – day virtual symposium to focus on:

  • Widening Access and Enhancing Growth in Financial Services
  • Technology as an Edge in the Financial Services Sector: Utilizing Business Intelligence
  • Financial Services Sector Fraud: A New Approach to Risk Management and Corporate Governance
  • Updates from Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority (Gains Achieved, Our Role and Responsibility, Requirements for Financial Services Sector Players)
  • Implications of IFRS 9, IFRS 17 on Financial Services Sector.
  • Updates on Financial Services Sector Regulation.
  • AML Reporting & Compliance

  • Feedback from FiRe Award on Financial Services Sector– Major Areas of Non-Compliance
