THE INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS OF KENYA

(established under the Accountant Act, Laws of Kenya)

 IFRS FOR NPOs WORKSHOP

Date: 24th February 2017

Venue: Hilton Hotel, Nairobi

Time: 8.00am to 5.00pm

Overview

Charities and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) primary objective is to provide goods/services for the general public, community or social benefit and where any equity is provided with a view to supporting the entity’s primary objectives rather than with a view to providing a financial return to equity providers, shareholders or members

Charities and other NGOs increasingly work internationally with grants from government funding their development and relief activities, while private donors and international foundations are increasingly taking a global approach to their work. As a result, charities and other NGOs face a multiplicity of international grant regimes. The NPO/NGO sector represents a heterogeneous mix of organizations with accountability relationships to a diverse range of stakeholders, including: beneficiaries, funders, government and regulators.

The situation in the recent past was made more complex by the lack of an agreed approach to financial planning and reporting. The International Financial Reporting Standards and Not-For-Profit Entities provide a cross sector review of the potential impact of recent proposals as the IFRS for SMEs is applied to not-for-profit organizations.

Towards this end, ICPAK has organized a one-day workshop to dialogue with NPOs and other charities on the above issues. The IFRS for NPOs workshop is focused on:

 ·         The role of reporting and accountability

·         International financial reporting frameworks

·         Globalisation of financial reporting in the not-for-profit sector
