DATE: 10th – 11th May 2018

VENUE: Hilton Hotel, Nairobi

TIME: 9.00am to 4.00pm

Theme

The theme of this workshop is “Indirect Taxes and their impact on your business processes”. The workshop is designed to demonstrate the technical aspects of the selected newly introduced indirect tax legislation and their practical impacts on business to enable participants gain a deeper understanding and appreciate the impact of these changes.

Overview of the training

The purpose of this workshop is for participants to understand and acquire skills necessary for application of indirect taxes to their day-to-day business transactions and enable them to become compliant with the relevant tax obligations. The workshop will provide illustrative examples to enable participants to apply the knowledge and experience gained to practical business problems.

For your businesses to prosper, it is important to manage the respective tax obligations responsibly and proactively. Indirect taxes, comprising of VAT, customs and excise duties, all of which affect the supply chain can have a significant negative impact on business profitability if not well managed.

The focus on customs and international trade will provide participants with the knowledge necessary to manage customs declarations and documentation. Further, the workshop will highlight on some of the common issues that arise during Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) audits of indirect taxes and provide mitigations that business can adopt.

Developing clear strategies and equipping employees (via specialized trainings) who deal with such indirect taxes on a daily basis with the requisite knowledge is one important way that business can identify and mitigate the indirect tax risk through reduction of errors, elimination of non-compliance costs and ensuring efficient and timely handling of the filing obligations.

This workshop will focus on tax legislation governing indirect taxes, including inter alia:

  • The EAC Common External Tariff, 2012
  • The VAT Act, 2013
  • Value Added Tax Regulations, 2017
  • Tax Procedures Act 2015
  • The Excise Duty Act, 2015
  • The Miscellaneous Fees and Levies Act, 2016

The Institute has set up this two-day workshop to provide insights in the changes to tax legislation and offer practical guidelines to implementing the selected laws covered in this module.

Objectives

At the end of the workshop, participants are expected or should be able to:

  1. Understand the amendments and new developments brought by the new Indirect tax laws;
  2. Appreciate the impact on the indirect taxes on the accounting reporting systems and the day-to- day business transactions and supplies;
  3. Appreciate some of potential means of tax planning to minimize tax reporting errors; and
  4. Manage any tax audits that may

Why the workshop is beneficial to you?

Most of the above laws are applicable to every aspect of supplies and transactions that businesses engage in on a daily basis. As a participant, you will be able to apply these changes in your reporting and also positively engage with other departments of the business on how these changes impacts on their business decisions.

The participants will also be able to proactively engage with the revenue authority during audits and manage any issues that may arise from such audits.
