Introduction
Project management refers to the use of knowledge, skills and tools to plan, launch, effect, manage and conclude work performed by a team in order to achieve set goals within specific timelines. It has developed into a critical discipline in previous years as organizations increasingly comprehend its worth. Many firms today implement their business structure in project form and therefore accounting professionals need to be well versed on this field. In fact, AICPA has identified project management as one of the important core competencies for entry-level accountants.
While some organizations still maintain project management at the tactical level, innovative firms have discovered the vital nature of project management as a strategic tool. The current economic environment dictates tight fisted management of resources which have to be divided between departments and divisions of companies. Strong financial understanding by accounting and finance professionals is required to advise management to make the right project investment decisions that enable organizations to win against their competition.
