Theme

The theme of this workshop is “Indirect Taxes and their impact on your business processes”. The Seminar is designed to demonstrate the technical aspects of the selected newly introduced tax legislation on indirect taxes and their practical impacts on your business to enable participants gain a deeper understanding and appreciate the impact of these changes.

Overview of the Training

The purpose of this seminar is for participants to understand and acquire skills necessary for application of indirect taxes on their day-to-day business transactions and enable them become compliance with the relevant tax legislation. The seminar will also provide illustrative examples to enable participants to use their knowledge and experience to discuss applications and possible challenges in implementation of new requirements.

For your businesses to prosper, it is the responsibility of the management to build then on a strong foundation and grow it in a sustainable way. Managing your tax obligations responsibly and proactively can make a critical difference in the sustainability of the business.

Indirect taxes, comprising of VAT, customs and excise duties, and environmental levies affect the supply chain and the financial system. These invisible taxes pose unique challenges to national tax functions can have significant impacts — on cash flow, absolute costs and risk exposures.  As such indirect taxes must be managed accurately and in real time.

Participants at the seminar will be equipped with the relevant skill sets that enable them understand the indirect tax consequences of their day-to-day business transactions and supplies identify risk areas and come up with sustainable tax planning opportunities for indirect taxes, throughout a tax life-cycle. The seminar will provide your finance team with the effective processes to help improve your day-to-day reporting for indirect tax, reducing attribution errors, reducing costs and ensuring indirect taxes are handled correctly.

The seminar focus on customs and international trade will equip with the knowledge necessary to help you manage customs declarations, audit and review product classifications and evaluate import/export documentation.

The seminar will also give a highlight on some of the tax audit issues that arise in dispute with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and possible ways in which may help in resolve classification or other disputes and issues with the authorities.

There have also been numerous changes in tax laws, and indirect taxes have not been left behind, with the introduction of Acts of Parliament with significant impact on the indirect taxes arena. This seminar will therefore focus on tax legislation governing indirect taxes, including inter alia:

  • The EAC Common External Tariff, 2012
  • The VAT Act, 2013
  • Tax Procedures Act 2015
  • The Excise Duty Act, 2015
  • The Miscellaneous Fees and Levies Act, 2016
  • The VAT Regulations, 2017

The Institute has set up this one-day seminar to provide insights in the changes to tax legislation and offer practical guidelines to implementing the selected laws covered in this module.

Objectives

At the end of the seminar, participants are expected or should be able to:

  1. Understand the amendments and new developments brought by the new Indirect tax laws;
  2. Appreciate the impact on the indirect taxes on the accounting reporting systems and the day-to-day business transactions and supplies;
  3. Appreciate some of potential means of tax planning to minimize tax reporting errors; and
  4. Manage any tax audits that may arise
