Theme: Resetting the Sails; Reassessing Accountants Public Interest Role in Africa

“It matter not the direction of wind, by resetting our sails we can keep course”

SYNOPSIS

 The Accountancy profession in Africa as indeed elsewhere in the world is beset by challenges that compound with each passing day.  Increased scrutiny by regulators, shareholders, investors and the public in general are but examples that well-illustrate the changing landscape for the profession.  Internal to the profession; are challenges in the complexity of various aspects resulting in specialties and an ever-increasing burden for those desirous of remaining at the top of the game. In the public arena, increasing citizen awareness created by highly interactive social media has put more spotlight on accounting professionals

Realizing the need to learn from best practices and share experiences, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) commenced a series of annual events termed Continental Accountability Seminar (CAS) with the first event held in Zambia in 2016.  This year the CAS caravan heads to Mauritius with a carefully planned event to deliver values in assisting Accounting professionals in Africa to remain relevant and play their public interest role in spite of changes around and within the profession.

The second Continental Accountability Seminar will focus on the following key areas;

  • The future of Accountancy in Africa
  • Safeguarding public interest- which way for African Professional Accountancy Organisations
  • Public Sector Accountability – Challenges and Opportunities
  • Emerging Trends and Developments in the Accountancy Profession – A global perspective
  • Unity of Africa’s Accountants – The role and place of PAFA & PAOs
  • Transition to IPSAS – Experiences and Lessons from Africa’s governments
  • Devolution Dividend; A review of key actors and institutions in devolution – Experiences from South Africa
  • Pan- Africanism; In search of the Torch
