THE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION

Theme: Staying Afloat Despite the Turbulence

Venue:  Flamingo Beach Resort & Spa, Mombasa

Date: 20th –22nd June 2018

Time: 9am to 4pm

1.0  Preview

The last three decades have seen a substantial growth in the higher education sector. Regional and demographic factors have contributed to the high numbers of applications as well as enrollment in vocational, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. As a natural response, more higher education institutions and degree awarding bodies, both state and privately owned, have been founded in order to absorb the bulging numbers.

Funding and managing finances is one of the key challenges facing this sector world over. Due to the recent financial crisis and economic slump, the problem has escalated in most of these institutions particularly in achieving the enrollment numbers, accessing funding opportunities as well as finding financing options. This can be blamed partially due to the following reasons; insufficient public support, unsustainable support from the private sector, centralization of the sector’s financial management practices including budgeting, and the ambiguity of strategic financing plans.

To address the emerging financial management and reporting issues affecting this sector, ICPAK has organized this three-day workshop to explore common practices undertaken by higher education institutions in order to survive and secure finances for their operational activities. Delegates will be exposed to diverse financial subsides presented by the government to boost this sector. This conference will also provide delegates with expert knowledge on the practical challenges affecting the sector and offer guidance on compliance with both the regulatory and reporting requirements.

Thematic areas of discussion include:

  • Dealing with Increased Competition- Income Diversification options for the Higher Education Sector
  • Effective Asset Management in the Public Sector
  • New Era of Strategic Public Finance Management – The Future Direction of Higher Education Funding Competition
  • Embedding a Business Mindset – Applying commercial thinking to the higher education sector
  • Pivoting internal operations ahead of the curve: Shared Services Model
  • Better Reporting –PFM, IPSAS & IFRS Standards Updates
  • Multi-Annual Budgeting and Planning-An activity-based approach
  • Taxation and Other Statutory Aspects in the Education Sector
  • Research and Consultancy Commercialization
