INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS OF KENYA

THE INAUGURAL UK CHAPTER SEMINAR

Date:           7th October, 2016

Venue:        The Wesley Hotel, City: London, UK

Theme: Global Opportunities for Business Growth and Professional Development

About the Seminar

ICPAK’s Inaugural Chapter Seminar – UK is an innovative seminar created to cross pollinate ideas and create synergies to develop new generation of accountants required to serve in 21st century. Such accountants are required to accelerate contribution to achievement of Sustainable Development Goals and Kenya Vision 2030.

The World Leaders committed to supporting the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda aimed to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all [on September 25, 2015]. The agenda supported by 17 sustainable development goals recognizes the following as important conduits for development: building effective, accountable and transparent institution at all levels; a substantial reduction in corruption and bribery in all forms; and development of skilled and adequate human capacity. In addition, to achieve the 2010 Constitution, Kenya has developed Vision 2030 that articulates key development goals aimed at improving the lives of Kenyans and enhancing the level of Kenya’s contribution to regional and global growth. Vision 2030 also calls for strengthening institutions in the country and developing skilled human capital required to serve in both private and public sector. Emphasis is placed on enhancing development at County level.

These developments have increased pressure on the accountancy professions to articulate how it can accelerate its contribution in Kenya and globally. In this regard, the Seminar will explore and design action oriented reforms specifically focused on developing accountants required to serve in 21st Century by sharing experiences from UK and Kenya. The seminar will benefit from participation and input from ICAEW and ACCA: institutions that ICPAK has entered into memorandum of agreements with. It will also serve as an opportunity to launch the Chapter.

Topic

1.0 Brexit: Impact on Business and Professional Opportunities in UK

The recent election by United Kingdom citizens to leave the European Union is perhaps one of the biggest economic landmarks of this decade. Christened Brexit, the largely misunderstood decision caused a stir, with internet search engines reporting excessive searches on what the exit meant conducted after the vote.

Speculation is rife and many professionals still wonder what the exit will mean to the public, expatriates and the global economy as a whole. Will freedom of movement be jeopardized? Will job opportunities reduce? Was BREXIT a democratic blunder or the best decision for the UK? Subject matter experts will lead the discussion on the impact and significance of Brexit on businesses and professional opportunities in the UK.

2.0 CFOs Forum: Private Equity Financing

While private equity financing is not a completely foreign concept, the activities conducted by the firms cause uncertainty in the business field, especially affecting C-suite managers. The trend today is to acquire companies with the goal of restructuring them to ensure increased value. This usually results in dramatic changes such as cash flow and margin expansions as well as changes in top portfolio managers.

The private equity investors’ end goal is usually to resell the company or list it in the public markets through an IPO. Since private equity financiers are not restricted by public company regulations, they hold tremendous controlling power and can easily alter business environment.

This forum will look into the challenges as well as opportunities presented by private equity financing as well as options of private financing globally in the UK and Kenya.

3.0 Emerging Issues in Audit and Assurance

Audit and assurance as a profession justly holds the reputation for being a very dynamic field. With emerging risks and challenges, auditors are required to play a significant role in minimizing surprises while ensuring effective management. Practicing auditors constantly have to acquaint themselves with the key concepts, new practices and guidelines in order to effectively discharge their duties. This session will seek to address current issues in audit and assurance with a view of propelling delegates to world-class standards of audit and assurance.

4.0 IFRS Updates

This session will examine the recent updates on the International Financial Reporting Standards. Pertinent areas such as IFRS 15 – Revenue recognition for the insurance industry will be covered as well as amendments to IFRS 4 on insurance contracts. This aptly timed discussion will prepare delegates for compliance with new changes in IFRS as well as expand their existing knowledge.

5.0 Transfer Pricing Today

One notable result of globalization is the emergence of transfer pricing as an increasingly complex yet critical area of focus. In addition to business operations, corporations operating across geographical boundaries also have to traverse issues such as the allocation and taxation of profits within the set frameworks. Transfer pricing is governed by a blend of restrictive regulations stemming from domestic laws, international laws, treaties and political rights, among others. This makes it a delicate issue for an organization as it could cause a myriad of challenges ranging from legal to operational efficiency type. As many nations continue to amend transfer pricing guidelines through measures such as standardization of procedures, this session will comprehensively unravel the incipient issues professionals are bound to grapple with in applying transfer pricing strategy. The session will also highlight most current issues in the subject area for open discussion.

6.0 Organizational Change: The Leadership Role of Professional Accountants

Gone are the days when the accounting profession was limited to book keeping and number crunching. As business structures evolve, brilliant managers have become cognizant of the crucial role accountants play in strategic decision making process. In recent years, numerous institutions have been placed under receivership owing to poor decisions made by the management. This is usually a result of blatant disregard to financial reports previously presented to the management. Such predicaments can be easily avoided where professional accountants are charged with advising the crucial decisions made for business continuity. The accounting profession therefore has to be remodeled to embrace realities such as the strategic decision making role to be undertaken. This session seeks to encourage accountants to be not only change agents but at best change leaders. The session will strategically demonstrate the role of a modern accountant in initiating change in their organization.

7.0 Strengthening of UK Chapter: Open Forum

In line with the Institute’s Strategic Plan (2016-2018), this session will be dedicated for discussions on the Chapter stability and growth matters. The chapter members will have a chance to elect their leaders who will steer the Chapter to the next level.
