WAPI NDURU

Professional Integrity & Human Rights Course Outline

21st September  – 21st October 2020

INTRODUCTION

The fundamental ethical principles for accountants across the globe requires a professional accountant to be one of integrity and who exercises straightforwardness and honesty; one who is objective and independence- free from bias, avoid conflict of interest or undue influence over others while maintaining professional competence and due care. These ethical principles are geared towards enhancing professional behavior and avoid actions that may bring the profession into disrepute.

Given their nature of work, accountants face ethical dilemma of confidentiality in their consideration to report. There are many instances when accountants may come across situations where they must consider making a report and or whistle blow, for example, fraud; theft; bribery; tax offences; market abuse; or breaches of the Anti-Money Laundering Regulations among other such vices.

It is against the foregoing that ICPAK and Amnesty International Kenya have designed Professional Integrity & Human Rights Course that embeds a human rights approach to fighting corruption and ensuring accountability. The course aims at bringing an additional value to a community of accountants that is already exposed to courses on ethics, fraud prevention, detection and response. By building conscious leadership capacities within the accountancy profession, Wapi Nduru Program will provoke accountants to recognize that their silence in the face of financial malpractice and malfeasance enables human rights violations.
