SUMMARY:ICPAK 7TH RESEARCH CONFERENCE 2026 (virtual option)
DESCRIPTION:THE INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS OF KENYA\n(Established under the Accountants Act\, Laws of Kenya) \nICPAK 7TH RESEARCH CONFERENCE 2026\nTheme:  Advancing Sustainability and Innovation through Accountancy Research \nDate: 12th-14th August 2026\nTime: 09.00am-03.30pm\nVenue: Virtual Delivery \nINTRODUCTION \nThe 7th ICPAK Research Conference\, themed “Advancing Sustainability and Innovation Through Accountancy Research\,”\, seeks to bring together practitioners\, academics\, policymakers\, regulators\, researchers\, and industry stakeholders to explore how accountancy research can advance sustainability and innovation. \nGlobally\, integrating sustainability into business strategy and financial decisions has become essential to achieving long-term growth. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals\, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change\, and Kenya’s development frameworks\, including Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda\, emphasize the need to balance economic growth with ESG responsibility. \nDespite the existence of these frameworks\, empirical studies show that while there has been increased adoption of sustainability and ESG reporting\, their integration into financial management and reporting remains limited. Many institutions continue to approach sustainability and innovation as separate functions\, resulting in inconsistent application in business and public sector decision-making. \nAt the same time\, developments in artificial intelligence and financial technology are redefining how performance is measured and value is reported. However\, the accountancy profession faces the challenge of adapting to technological change while ensuring that ethical and sustainability-driven practices remain central to financial management. \nThe 7th Research Conference\, therefore\, seeks to address this gap by providing a platform for the sharing of research findings and emerging trends to strengthen sustainability and shape the future of the accountancy profession in Kenya and beyond. \n\nRATIONALE\n\nThe rationale for the conference is grounded in key global and national developments\, outlined as follows: \n\nInternational reporting standards such as IFRS S1 and S2 have highlighted the need for reliable and comparable disclosures. Accountancy research on these areas can strengthen sustainability and integrated reporting and improve investor and stakeholder confidence.\nEconomies are facing increasing risks from climate-related risks such as droughts and floods\, which pose a threat to economic growth and stability. Accountancy research can illuminate best practices and develop frameworks for climate financial management.\nEmerging technologies such as AI\, blockchain\, big data analytics\, and fintech are transforming financial management\, auditing\, and reporting. Although these tools enhance efficiency\, they also raise important ethical governance and data protection concerns that require more research and policy alignment.\nKenya’s transition to accrual-based public sector accounting and ongoing reforms present opportunities to improve accountability and fiscal sustainability. Accountancy research can assess the impact of these reforms\, identify implementation gaps\, and propose strategies to enhance public sector governance.\n\n\nSUB-THEMES OF THE 7TH RESEARCH CONFERENCE\n\nThe conference will focus on five key thematic areas: \n\nAccounting and Financial Reporting\nTaxation and Public Finance Management\nInnovation and Digital Transformation\nRisk Analysis and Financial Management\nAccountability and Auditing\n\n\nSUBMISSIONS OF ABSTRACTS AND PAPERS\n\nThe Institute invites submission of abstracts and papers from researchers in the following accountancy-related thematic areas; \n\n\n\nS/N\nThematic Area \nSub-Topics \n \n\n\n\n\n1.    \nAccounting and Financial Reporting \n \n\n\nIntegrated and ESG reporting frameworks (IFRS S1 & S2)\nMeasurement and disclosure of environmental\, social\, and governance (ESG) performance\nAccounting for carbon credits\, natural capital\, and environmental assets\nEnhancing credibility and assurance in non-financial reporting\nThe evolving role of accountants in organizational transformation\n\n\n\n\n2.    \nTaxation and Public Finance Management \n \n\n\nGreen taxation\nIntegrating ESG principles into budgeting and fiscal policy\nPublic sector accountability for achieving development goals\nFinancing climate adaptation\nEconomic implications of carbon pricing and non-financial disclosures\n\n\n\n\n3.    \nInnovation and Digital Transformation\n\n\nDigital platforms for integrated and ESG reporting\nLeveraging AI\, big data\, and blockchain for transparency\nFintech innovations\nData analytics in tracking resource efficiency and performance metrics\nCybersecurity and ethics in digital reporting systems\n\n\n\n\n4.    \nRisk Analysis and Financial Management\n\n\nGreen bonds\, impact investing\, and responsible financing instruments\nClimate-related and ESG risk assessment and disclosure\nIntegrating non-financial factors into capital allocation and decision-making\nManaging risks in evolving business models\nLong-term value creation and performance measurement frameworks\n\n\n\n\n5.    \nAccountability and Auditing \n \n\n\nAuditing of ESG reports\nThe auditor’s role in promoting transparency and ethical conduct\nCombating greenwashing through reporting and verification\nGovernance mechanisms supporting responsible business practices\nEmerging audit methodologies for environmental and social disclosures\n\n \n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT DATES\n\nResearchers interested in presenting papers should use the link provided and the attached Submission of Instructions Form on the dates specified below: \n\nExpression of interest: 27th February 2026\nDeadline for submission of abstracts: 15th May 2026\nNotification of acceptance of abstracts 6th June 2026\nDeadline for submission of full papers: 30th June 2026\nNotification of acceptance of paper: 14th July 2026\nPresentation of Papers at 7th Research Conference: 12th – 14th August 2026\n\n\nSUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS\n\n\nResearchers interested in presenting at the conference should submit an expression of interest on or before 20th March 2026 at xxxxxxxxxxxxxx\nSubmissions should be in English and should be sent electronically to research@icpak.com.
