 FCPA Stanley K. Mbugua

On 25th September 1938, ICPAKs first chairman was born. FCPA Stanley Kunga Mbugua is the first Chairman of the Institute a position he held for two consecutive years. He was also the first chairman of Registration of Accountants Board as well as the first Fellow of the Institute. FCPA Mbugua scored another first when he was named the first African City Treasurer in 1970 a position he held until 1974. The city’s treasurer position was the highest financial position in the then city’s establishment. FCPA Mbugua was later appointed Inspector of Statutory Boards of Kenya in 1974. FCPA Mbugua is a holder of B.Sc. (Econ) which he obtained in 1963 from London University. FCPA Mbugua took the helm at 40 years of age.

1978-1981  
FCPA Ameerally R. Kassim-Lakha

Without doubt FCPA Kassim-Lakha is one of the pioneers’ accountants in Kenya. He was the second ICPAK Chairman and served between 1981 to 1982. He started practicing accountancy in 1957. He is founder member of Kassim-Lakha Abdula & Co and Abdulla Kasim-Lakha. Later FCPA Kassim-Lakha became a partner with PKF where he worked until his retirement. FCPA Kassim took over the leadership of ICPAK at 47 years; it is worth mention that he is a fellow of ICEAW.

1981-1982  
The Late FCPA Joseph M. Githongo

The late FCPA J. M Githongo served as ICPAK’s Chairman between 1982-1984. FCPA Githongo professional experience spans over five decades. He established his firm, Githongo & Company in 1969 and throughout the years he has mentored many professional accountants. FCPA Githongo is a holder of Master of Commerce from Commerce University-Delhi, a feat he achieved in 1970. He rose to the leadership of ICPAK at the age of 49 years.

1982-1984  
The Late FCPA Mathias Benedict Keah

The Late FCPA Mathias Benedict Keah served as ICPAK Chairman between 1984 and 1985. He was a dedicated member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya. During his professional career, he worked at Accountancy & Audit firms and at a Parastatal after which he established his own Accountancy and Consultancy practice. Over the years, he sat in the Board’s of professional bodies and various international, regional and local financial and educational entities. In 1987, Keah vied won the Kaloleni Parliamentary seat on a Kanu ticket. He successfully retained the seat in the 1992 and 1997 elections. During his political life, Keah also served as an Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Lands and Settlement and the Ministry of Transport and Communication. He died in August 2005. The late FCPA Mathias Keah rose to the helm of the profession at the age of 41 years.

1984-1985  
FCPA Daniel Ndonye

CPA Daniel Ndonye was ICPAK’s Chairman between 1985 and 1986. He is the immediate former Managing Partner/CEO of Deloitte East Africa. FCPA Ndonye has vast experience in financial/accounting leadership from his tenures at Deloitte East Africa for 20 years, ten of which he served as the Managing/Senior Partner until his retirement. FCPA Daniel Ndonye is an alumnus of the Alliance High School and University of Nairobi; it is worth noting that FCPA Ndonye graduated at the top of his class in 1973 with a first class honors degree in commerce. Mzee Ndonye is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and remains active in the profession as a trainer and a consultant. He rose to the helm of the Accountancy profession in Kenya at the age of 37 year, a feat shared only by a few members who have led the Institute while still in their thirties

1985-1986  
FCPA Joe Kamau Muchekehu

CPA Muchekehu was ICPAK’s Chairman between 1986 and 1987. FCPA Muchekehu is a fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, and the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya. He is also a member of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. He has received a Merit Scroll in recognition of his personal contribution to the accountancy profession worldwide. FCPA Muchekehu has been in the accountancy and consultancy practice in Eastern Africa for well over 35 years and has gained valuable experience in the fields of business advisory services, organizational reviews, feasibility studies and insolvency work, all of which have enabled him to be a well-known and respected professional in the region. FCPA Joe, rose to the chairmanship of ICPAK at only 35 years making him the youngest chairman ever.

1986-1987  
FCPA Ndung’u Gathinji

FCPA Ndung’u Gathinji served as ICPAK’s Chairman between 1987 to 1989. He is currently the Chairman of Drummond Investment Bank Limited. He is also a Former Chairman of Nairobi Stock Exchange Ltd and has served as a Director of International Federation of Accountants. He practiced as a Certified Accountant for 26 years before retiring as Chairman of Ernst & Young East Africa in 1997. Mr. Gathinji has held other positions in the International Accounting Profession, having represented Kenya in the International Federation of Accountants Board since 1987. He is a member of the Standards Advisory Council of the International Accounting Standards Committee foundation and an observer from Africa at the UNCTAD/ISAR meetings in Geneva and chaired the IFAC membership committee between 1995 and 1997 and the Development Nation’s Task Force in 2002/2003. FCPA Gathinji rose to helm of the profession at 43 years.

1987-1989  
FCPA James N. Muguiyi

FCPA James Muguiyi was ICPAK’s Chairman between 1989 to 1991. FCPA James N. Muguiyi is the Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Centum Investment Company Limited and its subsidiaries since December 2003. He was formerly the Group Managing Director of UAP Holdings Limited. He is a fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK). He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA). FCPA Muguiyi is a non-executive Director of several quoted companies in Kenya and Uganda. FCPA Muguiyi rose to the apex of accountancy at the age of 43years.

1989-1991  
FCPA Charles D. K Arap Kirui

FCPA Charles Arap Kirui served as ICPAK Chairman between 1991 and 1993. FCPA Kirui has a wealth of experience in accountancy field having worked at Pannel Bellhouse Mwangi and Co from 1972 and was later admitted into partnership in the same firm in 1978. FCPA Kirui is a holder of Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Nairobi. He took over the leadership of the Institute at the age of 43 years.

1991-1993  
FCPA Samuel Oketch Onyango

FCPA Samuel Oketch Onyango is mostly known as Sammy Onyango. He was ICPAK Chairman between 1993 to 1995. He is currently the CEO of Deloitte East Africa region which covers Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Sammy plays a multi-disciplinary role in the firm, merging both audit and consultancy work. FCPA Sammy has been the assignment partner and the key liaison between his firm and several large clients, ensuring that we fulfil our professional and contractual responsibilities, and that any professional, technical or client service problems are resolved promptly with timely consultations. He has been actively involved in the development of the accounting profession in Kenya and the Eastern Central and Southern Africa region. He is also a past President of the Eastern Central and Southern Federation of Accountants (ECSAFA) which he also represented in the council of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). FCPA Sammy rose to the apex of ICPAK leadership at a young age of 37 years.

1993-1995  
FCPA Nguru Muregi Wachira

FCPA Wachira was ICPAK Chairman between 1995 to 1997. He has over 35 years of post-qualification experience in management, consulting, accounting and audit. He has worked for the Central and Local Governments, the public sector and the private sector. FCPA Wachira has been actively involved with the accounting profession since the establishment of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya in 1978. He also served as a Council member of the Eastern, Central and Southern African Federation of Accountants (ECSAFA) as well as a Chief Examiner and Board member of the Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examination Board (KASNEB). He is also the Chairman of the Association of Certified Financial Analysts of East Africa. FCPA Nguru rose to the leadership of the Institute at the age of 44 years.

1995-1997  
FCPA Martin Luke Oduor-Otieno

FCPA Martin Oduor-Otieno was ICPAK Chairman between 1997 and 1999. He is currently serving as Senior Adviser (Financial Services) at Deloitte. Previously he was KCB Chief Executive. He is a holder of a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting from Nairobi University and an Executive MBA degree from ESAMI. He spent the early part of his career with Panel Bellhouse Mwangi as an Auditor and then spent 10 years in various finance positions in British American Tobacco. He worked with Barclays Bank for 13 years, although for 2 of those years he was seconded to the Government as the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. He was a Director of KCB (T), KCB (U), and KCB (S). He is a fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), Kenya Institute of Bankers (KIB) as well as a member of the Certified Public Secretaries (CPSK).He has been awarded the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (C.B.S) for his distinguished service to the nation by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Kenya. FCPA Martin rose the leadership of his peers in accountancy at the age of 43 years.

1997-1999  
FCPA Amos M. Kimunya

Precisely on 28th October 1987, ICPAK admitted into membership FCPA Amos Muhinga Kimunya. Twelve years later FCPA Amos had risen to the helm of the Institute serving as its chairman 1999 and 2001. He is a fellow of both the Institutes of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), and Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK). FCPA Kimunya has worked with various accounting firms, including Carr, Stanyer Gitau and company, Nairobi, and Neville Russell Chartered Accountants, London, Finmans Consulting and Matrix Development Consultants, Nairobi.Hon. CPA Kimunya has served on several boards, Advisory Board of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Authority, Muthaiga Golf Club, among others. FCPA Kimunya graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1986 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Accounting option. He joined politics during the 2002 general elections and won the Kipipiri Parliamentary seat on a NARC ticket. He served as a minister in various ministries between 2003 and 2012. FCPA Kimunya took the helm of ICPAK at the age of 37.

1999-2001  
FCPA Michael Waweru CBS

FCPA Michael Waweru, or as fondly known MG. served as ICPAK Chairman between 2001-2003. He is a graduate of University of Nairobi where he attained his Bachelor of Commerce Honors Degree. He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Accountants (FCCA), Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (FCPA) and a member of the Institute of Directors and Certified Trainer on Corporate Governance. FCPA Waweru was awarded the Chief of the order of Burning Spear CBS, by H.E The President of Kenya, due to his work in the revenue administration. He was the Commissioner General – Kenya Revenue Authority from 2003 – 2012. FCPA MG Waweru rose to the helm at 51 years.

2001-2003  
FCPA Rose Ogega

FCPA Rose served as ICPAK Chairperson between 2003-2005. She is the Managing Director of Bloom Consultancy Ltd. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (FCPAK) with extensive experience spanning over 25 years advising and managing both large, complex organizations and emerging startup ventures. Her work as a consultant, accountant, corporate governance specialist, entrepreneur, and non executive director has centered on helping organizations deal with the challenges and opportunities of unprecedented changes in their operating environment. Her experience in managing an SME primed her mind towards finding pragmatic solutions to such challenges as capital management, cost optimization, and transcending entrepreneurial trap. As a non-executive board director, Rose has worked very closely with senior executives on a broad range of strategic issues in a diverse array of industry setting including banking and insurance. She focuses her energy in utilizing her extensive expertise in good Corporate Governance as a way of unlocking organization value. FCPA Rose, and the only lady to has served her profession from the apex rose to leadership at the age of 43years.

2003-2005  
FCPA Joseph Wangai Wamai

FCPA Joseph Wangai, is perhaps known more as FCPA Joe Wangai, he served as ICPAK Chairman between 1985 and 1987. Currently FCPA Wangai is the Audit Function Leader at Delloite. He joined Deloitte Kenya in 1997 as a partner after a 12 year career with Pricewaterhouse Coopers. He has extensive experience in accounting and auditing as a result of his responsibility for a variety of clients in his professional career. His present and past clients include several large insurance companies, manufacturing companies and international organizations. FCPA Joe has several firsts. He joined the Institute on 11th April 1984 and was its Chairman in 2005 at the age of 50 years. FCPA Joe was awarded a Masters Degree in Business Administration by the University of Nairobi in 1973.

2005-2007  
FCPA Stephen Lugalia

Registered on 9th July 1986 is FCPA Stephen Lugalia. Populary known as FCPA Steve. FCPA Steve rose to Chairman of ICPAK in 2007 FCPA Stephen Lugalia currently works at The Heritage Insurance Company Limited, where he started as an accountant in 1997. Prior to this, Mr. Lugalia spent twelve years with Coopers & Lybrand as a training manager and audit manager. FCPA Lugalia is also a board member of the Institute of Directors in Kenya. Mr. Lugalia has also served on many ICPAK committees, including the Students Advisory and Library Committee and the Education Committee. FCPA Lugalia wore the regalia of ICPAKs national Chairman at the age of 49 years.

2007-2009  
FCPA Michael Itote

FCPA Michael Itote was ICPAK’s Chairman between 2009 to 2011. He is currently the director/Principal Consultant with management Audit Consulting Ltd (MACL) and a partner in the Audit and assurance Services Firm of Maina Itote & Kimathi, Certified Accountants. Michael trained and worked for Deloitte & Touche before joining Lonrho Africa Plc, initially into the role of Group Financial Controller before founding Management Audit Consulting Ltd (MACL) in 2001. FCPA Michael rose to the top at the age of 55 years.

2009-2011  
FCPA Patrick Mtange

On 28th February 1960, a young boy was born and named Patrick. 51 years later, that baby boy had grown and done all that is required including winning the confidence of members of ICPAK to serve as their national Chairman. FCPA Patrick Mtange is ICPAK’s immediate past chair. FCPA Patrick is currently the Finance & Administration Manager for Diakonia-Africa regional office. He has extensive experience in both public and private sectors as he has previously worked for KWS as Financial Controller; Finance Manager for KENGO, a local NGO; and has been an accountant at Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife.

FCPA Benson Okundi

FCPA Okundi has over 15 years’ experience and is currently the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Africa, Government and Public Services Industry Group leader and a highly respected and regarded Public Sector Practitioner with a wide breadth of experience in assurance, governance, financial management, and institutional development. In Kenya, he is the PwC Partner responsible for the Public Sector Assurance. He holds an MBA (Project Management) from the University of Ghana, and a B. Com (Accounting Option) from the University of Nairobi. He is also a Certified Public Secretary. He was previously the Vice Chairman and the Convener, Training and Development Committee of ICPAK.

FCPA Fernandes Barasa

FCPA Fernandes Barasa served as Chairman of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) from 2015-2017 July.  He is also the Managing Director of Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO). Prior to joining KETRACO, CPA Barasa worked as Treasury Manager and later Head of Factories Accounts at Kenya Tea Development Agency Limited. He also worked for Kenya Airways and East Africa Re in senior management positions. He previously served as a Convener of the Finance & Strategy Committee of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK). He has wealth of experience in Accounting, Risk and Financial Management. FCPA Barasa holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) and MBA-Finance Degrees from Kenyatta University.
