Electoral process in Kenya plays a significant role in determining the authoritative allocation of values and resources to safeguard public interests and solve public problems. The role of accountants in oversight, representation and legislation cannot be overstated as they are the watchdogs and gatekeepers to ensure prudent, effective and lawful application of resources for the benefit of the common citizens. Accountants are therefore duty-bound to participate in this important process that confers the oversight mandate as a noble responsibility that is easily identifiable with the values that the Institute and the accountancy fraternity espouse.
Transparent and accountable elections are central to democratic legitimacy, public trust, peaceful political competition, and effective governance. In Kenya, electoral transparency continues to be a priority area as institutions, political actors, civil society, professional bodies, and citizens prepare for future electoral cycles. Key areas of public concern include campaign financing, compliance by political parties and candidates, the integrity of election technology, voter education, election observation, dispute resolution, and post-election accountability.
Recent stakeholder engagement around campaign financing regulations and spending limits has reinforced the need for sustained public dialogue on electoral integrity. These discussions provide an opportunity to deepen understanding of the legal, institutional, financial, technological, and civic responsibilities required to deliver credible elections. The proposed webinar series will therefore create a platform for shared learning, practical recommendations, and multisectoral engagement on election transparency and accountability.
The credibility of elections depends not only on the conduct of polling day but also on the transparency of campaign financing, the fairness of political competition, the accountability of electoral institutions, and the confidence of citizens in the entire electoral cycle. Weak oversight of campaign resources, limited public access to electoral information, misinformation, gaps in civic education, and concerns about technology can undermine trust in electoral outcomes.
A focused webinar series will provide a timely forum for policy dialogue, professional input, and public education. It will also help stakeholders identify actionable reforms and practical accountability measures that can strengthen electoral governance before, during, and after elections.
The proposed webinar series will provide a timely and strategic platform for strengthening transparency, accountability, and trust in electoral governance. By bringing together institutional actors, professional bodies, political stakeholders, civil society, experts, and citizens, the series will contribute to practical conversations and reform-oriented recommendations that support credible, inclusive, and accountable elections.
The Webinar series are geared to promote informed dialogue, stakeholder collaboration, and practical reform proposals that strengthen transparency, accountability, public trust, and integrity in electoral governance in Kenya.
Specifically, through the webinars the Institute in collaboration with IEBC aims to:
Session 1: Campaign Financing, Compliance, and Accountability: Disclosure, reporting, auditing, enforcement, and oversight
Objective: To examine the effectiveness of the campaign financing framework, identify compliance challenges faced by political parties and candidates, and explore reforms that can improve disclosure, enforcement, and public accountability.
