Overview
Every organization irrespective of its size has an aspect of internal control. This is a system of controls financial or otherwise instituted by management to ensure the business of the organization is run in an orderly manner and safeguards its assets. Despite the enforcement of internal controls, the rate of fraud is still high as fraudsters have taken their game a notch higher. We have witnessed several corporate frauds or scandals over the last couple of years especially in the public sector. Since corporate fraud is frequently disguised as legitimate transaction hidden behind existing business practices, it may at times prove difficult to detect and prevent completely. Yet through effective procedures and process, routine inspections, and frequent upgrades, training of personnel, organizations and governments can effectively deter corporate fraud and counter its consequences.
These accounting scandals have created an increased demand for professionals with advanced forensic accounting skills to protect businesses from the proliferation of fraud and white-collar crimes. Forensic, fraud, and financial litigation support continue to remain among the hottest practice areas, with expected growth over the next several years. Forensic audits cover a wide range of investigative activities. It is often conducted to prosecute a party for fraud, embezzlement, or other financial crimes. Usually, a forensic audit is chosen instead of a regular audit if there is a chance that the evidence collected would be used in court. Once fraud has been detected the organization needs to institute internal control to safeguard the assets, ensure the reliability and integrity of financial information, ensure compliance, and promote efficient and effective operations. Fraud detection cannot be only based on technology or processes, instead, it needs a comprehensive strategy that requires human involvement, along those lines.
This symposium will empower you to recognize the root causes of fraud and white-collar crime in the current economy, understand the categories of fraud, equip you with methodologies of fraud detection and prevention, and heighten your ability to detect potential fraudulent situations.
To guide the discussion, the following topics will form the focus of the symposium:
