Mental Health & Substance Abuse in the workplace Webinar
Date: 22nd July 2025
Time: 04.00pm-06.00pm
Delivery Mode: Virtual

Overview

Work significantly impacts our health and well-being, providing financial stability, purpose, identity, and social connections. However, a toxic work environment can cause stress, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse, affecting everyone, regardless of their role within an organization. This issue affects employee well-being and organizational productivity. While workplace conditions are not controlled by senior leaders, we can protect our mental health by prioritizing mental well-being.

The effects of substance abuse on the job have a far-reaching impact on the profitability of a business. Many job duties involve being alert and accurate, having quick reflexes and being efficient in completing tasks. When a person is impaired, it can lead to accidents, inefficiency and reduced productivity. Absenteeism due to recovering from the effects of substance abuse and related illnesses can also be costly to businesses. Coworkers of addicted employees often work longer hours or take on additional tasks to compensate for lost productivity due to substance abuse. The workplace can provide a valuable opportunity for employers and employees to collaborate on recovery programs and guidelines, as most drug users are employed. This collaboration can help both parties work towards recovery.

Everyone has the right to work and a safe, healthy working environment. Work can be a protective factor for mental health, but it can also contribute to worsening it. Preventable work-related mental health conditions can be achieved by promoting mental health and supporting individuals with mental health and substance abuse addiction. Addressing substance abuse in the workplace and implementing effective prevention and treatment measures are critical to promoting a healthy and productive work environment. This webinar covers potential indicators of employee substance abuse, prevention and treatment strategies. Key discussion areas:

  1. Relationship between work and mental health
  2. Identifying indicators of substance use in the workplace
  3. Prevention and treatment strategies for substance abuse
  4. Tips on promoting good mental health at the workplace
  5. Ethical and legal considerations
  6. Workplace as mental health support
