Overview

All professionals are expected to conduct themselves in an ethical manner as they undertake various engagements.  It is said that ethics is about having standards of behaviour and ‘doing the right thing’. This means that an ethical business will act in a socially responsible way, doing what is right even if it is not required to do so by legislation or regulation, and regardless of the impact it might have on profits.

This view also applies to professionals in all spheres of work. Professional ethics apply in this case, and it is critical to note that professional ethics entail principles that govern the behaviour of a person or group. Professionals are required to practice reasonable, responsible, and transparent behavior that consciously avoids harmful actions by embodying high ethical standards.

Consequently, even the properly regulated professional organizations globally develop a set of ethical standards which their members are expected to abide by. This is because of the underlying consideration that all professions raise ethical issues, so the need for professional ethics and their practical application for their members who are in practice.
