OVERVIEW:

Learning institutions and hospitals operate in increasingly complex financial environments. They handle multi-source funding, strict regulatory demands, rapidly evolving accounting standards, digitization requirements, and heightened expectations for transparency and accountability. Accountants in these sectors face unique challenges, including:

  • Ensuring compliance with public financial management (PFM) regulations,
  • Managing restricted funds, grants, and donor-supported programs,
  • Implementing IPSAS/IFRS-based reporting,
  • Strengthening internal controls and audit readiness,
  • Adopting digital and automated financial systems,
  • Enhancing financial planning to support service delivery and institutional growth.

To address these capacity gaps, this workshop aims to upgrade the competencies of accountants from educational and health institutions, ensuring more efficient financial governance and improved institutional performance.

  • Overview of applicable accounting standards (e.g., IPSAS, IFRS, INPAS) for education and healthcare institutions
  • Differences in reporting requirements between public, private, and non-profit institutions
  • Compliance with government funding, grants, and donor restrictions
  • Audit readiness and responding to regulatory inspections

2. Financial Reporting & Transparency

  • Best practices in financial statement preparation for schools and hospitals
  • Segment reporting: academic programs, departments, clinical services, and cost centers
  • Disclosure requirements for tuition revenue, patient service revenue, and subsidies
  • Enhancing transparency for boards, regulators, donors, and the public

3. Revenue Recognition & Funding Models

  • Accounting for tuition fees, scholarships, and deferred revenue
  • Patient billing, insurance claims, and third-party reimbursements
  • Grants, endowments, donations, and restricted funds
  • Government funding and performance-based financing

4. Cost Accounting & Budgeting

TARGET AUDIENCE

This workshop targets Accountants in learning Institutions and Hospitals in the public and private sectors.

NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL TRAINING AUTHORITY (NITA) REIMBURSEMENT:

The Institute is registered as a trainer with National Industrial Training Authority. The Institute’s registration number is DIT/TRN/47. Participants who are registered levy contributors should apply to NITA for reimbursement of their fees. Please note that this is applicable for Kenyan citizens only and subject to NITA regulations.
